Cleankill Pest Control returned to Avon Fire and Rescue to successfully bird-proof an area so firefighters could use the space safely.
The pest control company had previously visited the site to bird-proof the fire station's training tower which had become a roosting and nesting site for pigeons.
After the first successful bird-proofing project, Cleankill’s bird-proofing team Russ Almond and Phil Paul were called in again to tackle a different area of the site. An external structure with a large canopy was being used by pigeons for perching, resulting in hazardous guano. The pigeon mess was not only creating a severe slip hazard but also posing a serious health risk.
Prolonged exposure to bird fouling can cause structural deterioration as it contains uric acid, giving it a highly acidic pH level. When moisture dissolves these acids, they chemically react with common building materials including masonry and stone, metals and roofing materials. There are also hygiene concerns due to the bacteria present within guano. This area of the fire station was very active and often used in emergencies where fast response times were imperative, so it was crucial for the issue to be resolved efficiently and effectively.
Cleankill’s bird proofing team installed a horizontal net to the underside of the canopy which dropped down at an angle covering the metal frame and therefore preventing pigeons from perching there.
Furthermore, the team added a rigid wire mesh for additional protection and to prevent any future issues. The result was a clean, safe structure and the area below is now usable and risk-free. The thorough work completed also provided long-term protection for the structure reducing the possibility of re-infestation.
Cleankill Pest Control Surveyor Adam Keig said: “The project demonstrated the importance of professional bird-proofing that is designed to not only fix the problem, but prevent it from happening again.
“We were delighted that Avon Fire and Rescue once again trusted Cleankill to deliver an effective solution for a high-stakes site where swift movement and urgent response times are critical.”
