Last week was very busy - three days at a great event – The Facilities Show at ExCell in London. Despite sore legs, hips and ankles from standing so long, we left the event on a high and with many good quality leads.

As well as working hard, we had fun as lots of brave people tried the sago worm larvae and the grasshoppers – something different that was being talked about all around the massive exhibition halls

Barrie Foster's commemorative trophy

Friday 16th May saw all 24 Cleankill staff enjoy a morning's conference at a hotel in the New Forest followed by an afternoon Battlefield Live experience which left everyone aching for a few days afterwards! After a champagne reception in the hotel grounds we had a meal in a private dining room. The event celebrated Cleankill reaching a one million pound contract portfolio and it was also a celebration of Barrie Foster's retirement.

Rewarding our pest control technicians for consistently delivering a great service is part of the way we do business at Cleankill. Last year our service technicians met their ‘state-of-service’ targets for quarter one and quarter two which won them a day out.

Last Thursday the Cleankill directors got together in Alfriston for one of our regular ‘Vision’ meetings where we discuss the future aims and directions of the company. The next morning Jon and I had some bird work to do in Brighton (the risk assessment for hangovers and ladders was carried out thoroughly!!). When we had finished, Jon took me back to Seaford where I picked up my car to head back to the office in Croydon.

Next week we are doing something a little different and sponsoring a sell-out business networking event at Crystal Palace involving more than 100 people.

We work with many facilities managers across the UK. Once they use us, they tend to stay based on our quality of service – not necessarily price, as we are definitely not the cheapest. We have, however, held our prices for the last four years which customers have welcomed.

One of the great things about being a pest control company is that everyone needs or is legally required to keep their premises pest free. Of course, there are many companies to choose from and we have to do everything we can to outshine the competition. This includes making sure all our accreditations are up to date such as PICS supplier scheme, ISO9001 and 14001, Exor, Chas, Construction Line, Achilles UVDB and Contractor Plus, Safe Contractor and Altius Assured Vendor.

I took part in a BBC Radio interview this morning. Apparently foxes have been digging up a bowling green in Bognor. My suspicion is that they are using a bonemeal fertiliser on the grass which is attracting the foxes as they are digging up to 30 holes a night to find out where the bones are hidden!!

One of the problems with being a pest controller is finding the energy to deal with the pests that you get in your own home - I little like decorators who never get around to their own houses. Around Autumn time I invariably get mice in the understairs cupboard of my own house, coming in through the gas pipe entry from outside.

Every year in the Autumn, our 8-legged Arachnid friends that have been living quite happy outdoors all Summer, start to move indoors. It is therefore not surprising that Cleankill (along with most other pest control companies), receive lots of enquiries about spiders at this time of year. In addition to the usual enquiries, there has been a lot of recent interest and concern about False widow spiders, following the concerns raised in newspaper and internet articles.
